Stage 1 Cancelled Due to Inclement Weather
May 2, 2018 (Big Bear Lake, CA) – Due to inclement weather conditions at Big Bear Lake, a joint decision has been made between Redlands Bicycle Classic racing officials, USA Cycling, and California Department of Transportation to cancel Stage 1 of the 34th edition of the Classic. This was to be the return to Big Bear after a two-year hiatus from the location. Conditions on the road leading up the mountain included chain restrictions, making it impossible for teams and other racing staff to drive up safely.
“The entire RBC team and the community of Big Bear worked tirelessly to present an amazing time trial today,” Marc Shaw said, president of the Redlands Bicycle Classic. “However, with the reappearance of winter overnight, and into the morning hours, we could not safely get the race teams and staff up the mountain. Keeping everyone’s safety as our top priority, we made the difficult decision to cancel today’s stage. We appreciate your understanding and we’re looking forward to kicking the race off in Yucaipa tomorrow morning.”
Racing will now begin Thursday, May 3, 2018 for Stage 2 Yucaipa Road Race with the para-cycle categories at 9 AM, followed by pro men at 10 AM and women at 11 AM PDT.
